An Introduction To Laser Rhinoplasty
Lasers are not just for getting rid of the villains in science-fiction movies. They are used for a many things these days. Their have many uses in plastic surgery. There are several types and they can be used for procedures such as skin resurfacing, tattoo removal, varicose vein treatment, and treating a number of skin conditions. But can they be used for rhinoplasty? Yes, they can be used to correct abnormalities caused by an over growth of thickened skin. When used in conjunction with traditional rhinoplasty, they can be used to eliminate thickened skin that causes a large, bulbous nasal tip. The entertainer, W.C.Fields would have benefited greatly from this treatment had it been available in his day. It is a very non invasive procedure for those who fear the knife. Two lasers can be used with local anesthesia to treat skin thickening caused by acne rosacea.
Acne rosacea is caused by bacteria on the skin. In severe cases, it shows up as very red bumps and can cause thickened skin and a bulbous nose tip. The laser heats the skin, destroying the top layers. There is a sensation of warmth and one patient described the sensation as similar to being popped repeatedly by a rubber band. The body sheds the damaged skin and new, healthy skin immerges. After care is similar to treating a really bad sunburn. You will need to clean with a gentle cleanser and avoid rubbing. Pain is minimal and recovery is quick. Again, think sunburn. Although their uses in rhinoplasty is limited right now, there will probably come a day when you can have a whole new face without being touched by a scalpel.
With this, bleeding and scarring would be virtually eliminated. It's hard to realize that when we were kids, we marveled at all the movies depicting people sitting in chairs, being bombarded by lasers and miraculously transforming into perfect specimens. The future is now and laser rhinoplasty is just the start of what may be accomplished. Insurance often will not cover laser treatment. The FDA does not recognize laser therapy as a surgery, but as a medical procedure. Take heart; many plastic surgeons offer payment plans and there are companies that make medical loans at a fairly low interest rate. Plastic surgery on installment plans--what a concept. It does provide a way for the average person to get what they need without going beyond their budget.
